228 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Vincent J. Tomeo is a retired educator who dedicated his career to fostering a passion for learning and an excitement for history in his students. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history at Queens College, he continued his studies at New York University, where he achieved master’s degrees in both history and museum studies. Afterwards, he initially operated as an archivist in the New York City Hall of Records, where he quickly realized that his natural extroversion and desire to create connections were left unmet. Mr. Tomeo pivoted into education shortly thereafter, teaching history at Juan Marau Junior High School. He would continue to teach at the middle and high school levels throughout his career, serving the students of Boys and Girls High School, Grover Cleveland High School and Francis Lewis High School before his retirement. Known for his commitment to student growth and his ability to develop a rapport with classes and colleagues, Mr. Tomeo emphasized innovative and standards-aligned lesson plans that allowed students to gain knowledge while developing higher-order problem-solving skills. Reflecting on his career, Mr. Tomeo considers it an honor to have had the opportunity to help shape his students’ futures and inspire them to pursue lifelong learning opportunities. He feels that his greatest success was seeing his students succeed despite the challenges they faced in the classroom and in the community. Outside of his work in education, Mr. Tomeo is a celebrated poet and writer with more than 1,100 pieces published in magazines and journals. To wit, he is the author of “The Usefulness of Hippopotamus: A Humorous Chapbook for Trying Times,” and the recipient of the Rainier Maria Rilke Poetry Award. In his retirement from teaching, he looks forward to continuing to write and publish with a focus on short stories. VINCENT J. TOMEO TEACHER (RETIRED) Francis Lewis High School Flushing, NY
