172 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION TARLA WARD GERNERT FOUNDER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Homeschool Connections Educational Services Inc. Southeast Michigan Drawing from decades of experience in the field of education, Tarla Ward Gernert has found success as the founder, visionary and chief executive officer of Homeschool Connections Educational Services Inc. The independent homeschool program was created to serve local families throughout Southeast Michigan. Expanding to multiple campuses in several communities and distance learning opportunities, Homeschool Connections serves and supports hundreds of students throughout the region each year and thousands over the more than 20 years of its existence. The business offers comprehensive and exciting K-12 classes taught by talented and passionate teachers. Driven to help parents educate their children in a setting of their choice, and lead students toward their passion, Ms. Gernert works diligently to imbue others with the knowledge that their ideas are valuable, as well as the courage to create them. A teacher by profession, Ms. Gernert hails from a family of educators, including her grandparents, mother and aunt. After attaining a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a mathematics certification from Liberty University, she worked as a classroom teacher for several years. Afterward, she excelled as an academic advisor at what is now Liberty University Online, and she later taught at a classical Christian school. After moving to North Carolina, Ms. Gernert began homeschooling her two daughters and quickly discovered a community of like-minded parents. With their assistance, she helped create an academy for the fine arts — a classical model homeschool program that emphasized learning about the art, literature, theater, and music of the medieval and Renaissance time periods. Relocating to Michigan, Ms. Gernert became involved at her local church and met several talented and enthusiastic educators. Drawing inspiration from the rich homeschooling environment she had previously encountered in North Carolina, she decided to start her own business, establishing a program with the help of teachers in biology, theater and writing, which would eventually become Homeschool Connections.
