174 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION BILL JANTSCH DISTRICT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR (RETIRED) Dubuque Community Schools Peosta, IA Bill Jantsch enjoyed a fulfilling career in athletics education that spanned over 45 years, ending with his retirement in 1997. He previously served as the district athletic director for the Dubuque Community School District in Iowa. Working in this capacity from 1982 until 1997, he was responsible for supervising the physical education program, as well as the driver’s education program. He was also active on various administrative councils, scheduled all athletic activities for two high schools and two middle schools, and oversaw the hiring of referees and coaches for the district, in addition to enforcing disciplinary rules for sports infractions. In honor of his numerous contributions, Mr. Jantsch was honored on two occasions as the District Athletic Director of the Year, and he received the State Award of Merit from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 1996. Well-educated, Mr. Jantsch studied physical education at the University of WisconsinMadison, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. He went on to attain a master’s degree in earth science at Cornell University in 1966. Prior to his administrative work, Mr. Jantsch was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, serving in active duty for two years, followed by another 18 as a reservist. During his two years of duty, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, a military training facility in North Carolina. Mr. Jantsch began his career as a boys’ basketball coach at Belmont High School in Belmont, Wisconsin, in 1959, where he would later serve as a football coach in 1964. During this time, he was named the Blackhawk League’s football coach of the year and basketball coach of the year, both on two occasions. He would also be inducted to the school’s Hall of Fame in 2021. Mr. Jantsch went on to work as a science teacher at Dubuque Senior High School in 1969, where he would also serve as a sophomore basketball coach and head football coach in the years to follow. Throughout this period, he was proclaimed the Coach of the Year in several different sports, including baseball, basketball and football.
