179 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION To commemorate her military achievements, Dr. Mitchell was awarded the Decorated Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. For her work in health care and education, she has been recognized with many other accolades. These include the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in 2014, the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Society of Allied Health Professionals in 2013, and the Gold Patrick Henry Medal from the Military Order of World Wars. As of 2020, Dr. Mitchell is no longer teaching, but she remains at El Paso Community College as an administrator, dedicating herself to furthering the education of others. For her, the most inspiring part of her work is seeing former students blossom as nursing professionals who serve their communities as she has. School District and the professional activities committee and public education committee for El Paso’s chapter of the American Cancer Society. Serving on the health professional shortage task force and the health care council for the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce from 2001 and 2002, respectively, Dr. Mitchell maintains her status as an integral El Paso citizen. As well as contributing her service to her local community, Dr. Mitchell has authored papers for numerous professional journals. Likewise, she co-authored “Nursing Perspectives and Issues” in 1989 and again in 1993. Prior to her roles in teaching and administration, she followed in the footsteps of her father and uncle and joined the United States Army, serving from 1971 to 1978 as a captain. She retained the title of captain when she transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1978 until she retired in 1998.
