183 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION In accounting for her success, Dr. Smiley credits the inspirational influence of the many teachers she has met throughout her life, both as a student and as an educator in her own right. Among the highlights of her professional journey, she is particularly proud to have observed the progress of her students; she would often watch students arrive with a limited background in the field and emerge as full-fledged professionals. Dr. Smiley is also gratified to have led the music department at SUNY Oswego to accredited status via the National Association of Schools of Music during her time as chairperson. Looking toward the future, Dr. Smiley aspires to continue promoting an operetta she rediscovered, “The Golden Cage,” which was written by two refugees from Europe during World War II and was last performed on New Year’s Eve in 1945. The operetta was performed once again at the Oswego Opera Theater in 2022, with further productions to come. Dr. Smiley has also presented a number of conference papers via the American Musical Society, and she has served as the president of the board of directors at the Oswego Opera Theater since 2009. Other affiliations to her credit include the National Organization for Women, the Oswego County Historical Society, the American Recorder Society, the Renaissance Society of America, the Music Library Association, and the Medieval Academy of America. Noted for her myriad contributions to the field of music education, Dr. Smiley was a grantee of the National Endowment of the Humanities between 1990 and 1991 and was previously an honorary fellow of the SUNY Research Foundation in 1971, 1972 and 1974. She also won a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Oswego in 1973. Furthermore, during her own academic journey, Dr. Smiley attained the Delta Kappa Gamma International Scholarship for the year of 1964.
