STILLMAN, PHD PROFESSOR EMERITUS The University of Oklahoma Jerusalem, Israel Boasting over 50 years of experience, Dr. Norman “Noam” A. Stillman has excelled as a professor, writer and historian. His career began with his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a BA in 1967. Continuing at his alma mater, he graduated with a PhD in oriental studies in 1970, and he later completed postdoctoral coursework in rabbinical studies at The Jewish Theological Seminary in 1971. Passionate about education and passing on his knowledge to others, Dr. Stillman began his career working with the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Literatures at New York University in 1970. Afterward, he obtained a position at The State University of New York at Binghamton, where he taught history and Arabic from 1973 to 1995. Two years before leaving the university, he taught additional classes in Near Eastern history, languages and cultures. In 1995, he moved to The University of Oklahoma, where he earned the title of Schusterman-Josey Professor Emeritus of Judaic History. In addition to his long-term teaching commitments, Dr. Stillman has served as a visiting professor at the Rothberg International School, a school for international students studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Likewise, he was a visiting professor at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris, France, and at the LudwigMaximilians-Universität München in Germany. He also taught as a Momigliano lecturer at The University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought and a Sherman lecturer at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. Dr. Stillman was a founding member and executive board member of the Israel Institute from 2012 to 2020 and is an advisory board member for the World Union of Jewish Studies. In his other civic-minded endeavors, he has conducted fundraising efforts for Hillel International, a Jewish campus organization. Accounting for his accomplishments, Dr. Stillman considers his most significant to be his pioneering work on Jewish history in the Arab world, which has reached a broad readership.
