She has published extensively, with credits including book chapters, academic papers, and the article “African-American Male Students’ Perceptions on Leadership and Service in an Academic Community,” featured in the Research Association of Minority Professors Journal. In the future, Dr. Dawson-Threat will continue searching for donors to finance Grade A Plus’ move to a larger facility and expansion to serve more students in the community. She looks forward to building connections with educators and families and cementing the organization’s legacy as it grows. Driven by an unwavering commitment to those around her, Dr. Janice DawsonThreat has spent 25 years serving her community as an educator. Graduating with a BA in communication and education from Elmhurst College in 1973, Dr. Dawson-Threat went on to continue her education at Northeastern Illinois University, where she earned an MA in communications. While studying for a PhD in education at Iowa State University, Dr. Dawson-Threat’s research led her to pursue the effectiveness of integrated education for low-income children of color, focusing on the impact of poverty on learning outcomes. Observing the opportunities offered by educational institutions, she found that children of color were less likely to receive the support needed to achieve academic success. In response, she established Grade A Plus Inc., a nonprofit community organization providing children with additional educational enrichment to help combat school inequity.
