Mr. Essex has been honored with several accolades, including recognition for the Illinois State Board of Education Highest Academic Gains in 2011. In light of his fulfilling career, he largely attributes his success to his dedicated work ethic. Furthermore, he values wisdom and listening to stories and receiving historical lessons from elders, chiefly from his grandfather, Sampson Essex, who often recounted tales of their ancestors tirelessly working the lands. Such stories have served as a motivational force in everything Mr. Essex has achieved. Christopher Essex leverages more than three decades of experience as a leader in the fields of special education and academic administration. He has excelled as a special education administrator for the Chicago Public Schools in the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) since 2017. He originally joined the academic organization in 2007 as a special projects manager in the Office of Specialized Services, maintaining this position until 2009. Mr. Essex later became an instructional practice administrator for the OSD from 2014 to 2016 after working as an assistant principal at the Wendell Phillips and Ombudsman high schools in Chicago 2010 and 2014. Mr. Essex began his career as a special education paraprofessional for the Winona Senior High School in Minnesota from 1993 to 1996. After traveling to Chicago, he became a special education teacher at the Orr Academy High School from 1996 to 2001, and he later served as the school’s dean of students from 2001 to 2007. Mr. Essex currently remains affiliated with several pertinent organizations, including the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children. He is also a former member of the Chicago Teachers Union, having participated from 1996 to 2007.
