193 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION Driven by her passion to learn and share her knowledge with others, Dr. Marilyn Faris Scholl provided more than 45 years of expertise as an educator before retiring in 2022. Joining the Arlington Public Schools (APS) in 1987, she became adept at creating successful grant proposals and raising millions of dollars in funding. These were primarily used to create comprehensive teenage parenting programs, which subsequently reduced female student truancy, helped mothers graduate, connected young fathers with their children, and aided in establishing an infant care center. Under Dr. Scholl’s leadership, the number of pregnant adolescents in Arlington County dropped from 365 per year to less than 30. For her leadership in this arena, she was recognized as a Person of Vision by Arlington County in 2006. Her successful grants also created the Arlington Even Start Family Literacy Program for illiterate adult parents and their children. Dr. Scholl began her career in 1976 at Winslow High School, where she taught home economics for six years. She then became a teacher educator for the Arizona Department of Education at the Arizona Center for Vocational Education. In this position, she traveled extensively throughout rural northern Arizona, visiting and assisting more than 100 teachers and organizing regional workshops and statewide vocational education conferences. After moving to Virginia, she served for 28 years as a supervisor for APS and then for seven years as a special needs teacher. Dr. Scholl attended Northern Arizona University, earning a bachelor’s degree and an MA in home economics education in 1981. Years later, she attended George Mason University, achieving a PhD in educational leadership and administration in 2012. She holds numerous certifications through the Virginia Department of Education and has presented at many state and national conferences. Dr. Scholl attributes her success to her intelligence, positive upbringing, 4-H, strong work ethic, healthy lifestyle and enduring faith. She will soon launch her “Dr. Marilyn and Chef Tasty” tutorials on how to cook simple and nutritious food for the special needs population. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, singing, skiing, reading, swimming, experimenting with new recipes, and offering her services to others. DR.
