At Crown Heights Elementary School, Ms. Farris focuses on integrated reading and reading intervention classes for K-4 students, including phonics, decoding, and reading foundations based on the Wilson method. As a curriculum fellow, she created a guided reading plan for use in the 2021 to 2022 academic year, and she continues to research and study to remain at the forefront of changes in the way reading is taught. She hopes to continue to develop curriculum in the coming years, including a standardized intervention model, and increase the efficacy of the school’s literacy instruction. Margaret Helen Farris is a learning specialist and curriculum fellow at Achievement First Crown Heights Elementary School, a public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Her early struggles as a student with dyslexia sparked her interest in education, and her own academic journey led her to pursue a career in teaching. She holds a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Skidmore College and completed a Master of Arts in literacy and reading education at New York University in 2011. Ms. Farris began her career as an after-school kindergarten teacher for the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in 2008. Born and raised in Chicago, she hoped to teach in the city but widened her reach due to the economic recession. She subsequently worked as a reading teacher at the Santa Maria Catholic School and as an afternoon assistant at the Friends Seminary before joining Achievement First as a first-grade special education teacher at Crown Heights Elementary School in 2013.
