197 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION Ms. Fried remains active as a workshop presenter for many organizations, including the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) and the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE). Furthermore, she has toured many schools in Spain and Mexico; her international travels have helped forge her insights regarding various school systems and priorities abroad. Recently, Ms. Fried has studied the Mayan language and volunteered in Quintana Roo, Mexico, to advance Spanish and English literacy among Mayan-speaking children. Ms. Fried received a BA in English and public speaking from San Francisco State University in 1968 and an MS in bilingual cross-cultural education from Pepperdine University in 1984. Furthermore, she holds certification in Spanish from the University of Salamanca and the University of Valencia, Spain. She also holds credentials as a Bilingual Cross-Cultural Specialist in bilingual education in Spanish from Pepperdine University. To commemorate her achievements, both the CABE and NABE awarded Ms. Fried as the Bilingual Teacher of the Year, and in 2023, California Senator Susan Rubio named her as the Woman Educator of the Year. She has also appeared in various news outlets and podcasts, including EdSource Magazine in 2021 and 2022, regarding her unique classroom approach. The Baldwin Park Unified School District recognized her in May 2022, renaming the Sierra Vista High School Library as the Charlene Fried Library in her honor. Ms. Fried largely credits her success to the accomplishments of her students, many of whom have hailed from low-income backgrounds and other countries. She believes it is their stories that define who they are and empower them to achieve their dreams while helping others find theirs. Leveraging over 50 years of academic expertise, Charlene Ellen Fried has distinguished herself at Sierra Vista High School, where she serves as a bilingual teacher on behalf of hundreds of students. Likewise, she established the school’s first soccer program. Ms. Fried also excels at the university level, teaching ELD and Spanish methodology, classroom management, literacy, and other credential program classes at California State University, Los Angeles and Loyola Marymount University.
