213 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION to help both teachers and students adapt to a changing academic environment. In practical terms, the organization provides webinar training for teachers on project-based learning, a student-directed system that can empower educators with the freedom and creativity to meet their pupils at their level, rather than relying on standardized tests. Leveraging more than 30 years of experience as an educator, mentor and consultant in engineering, mathematics and the arts, Mr. Romero is best noted as the developer of Space Islands, one of the first long-distance online educational programs in the United States. He was also inducted into the Library of Congress, thanks to his work with 2.3 million students and teachers across 40 nations. Following this accomplishment, he was retained by JPL NASA as a consultant in 2002, where he operated for two years. Outside of his primary efforts, Mr. Romero has distinguished himself as a selfemployed instructional designer, community theater director, and public speaking and storytelling coach for over 25 years. Well-regarded for his extensive educational repertoire, Mr. Romero holds a BS in information technology from the University of Phoenix, as well as an MEd in instructional design and e-learning from Concordia University. In accounting for his overall success, he largely credits his focus on project-based and student-directed programs, which have proven invaluable in answering the persistent student question of, “Why do I have to learn this?” By meeting students at their level with hands-on applications that focus on real-world problems, rather than theoretical concepts, their enthusiasm can only grow. Looking to the future, Mr. Romero aspires to build upon past achievements and serve as a reliable source of guidance and support for educators worldwide. Peter Romero has found success as the founder and chief executive officer at the Academy of Leonardo’s Apprentice. The educational nonprofit organization strives to offer answers to the challenges facing 21st century educators. Drawing inspiration from its namesake, Leonardo da Vinci, who saw the interconnected nature between science, engineering and the arts, Mr. Romero’s organization seeks to utilize emerging technologies and new learning methodologies PETER ROMERO FOUNDER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, EDUCATOR Academy of Leonardo’s Apprentice Azusa, CA
