215 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition EDUCATION Dr. Mary Gene Ryan boasts nearly five decades of experience in the field of academia. Most notably, she has earned distinction as the managing editor for Health Physics, the refereed journal of the Health Physics Society (HPS). In this capacity, she is responsible for handling all manuscripts from the point of acceptance to final publication, as well as copyediting, curating content for each monthly issue, and ensuring that all technical and editorial concerns are fully addressed before publishing. Outside of her work at HPS, Dr. Ryan is an adjunct professor for the CAPS Program at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. Among her accomplishments in this role, which she has held since 2006, she is particularly proud to have helped the school become an electronic campus, as well as burnishing its reputation as a leading institution in distance learning. She was also the dean of student success for over a decade. Dr. Ryan also served as a grant coordinator at Midlands Technical College from 1996 until 2006, where she was instrumental in the creation of a reading program. She was also the dean of arts and sciences at Aiken Technical College from 1983 to 1996, during which time she was honored as the Faculty Member of the Year. Other accolades to her credit include various staff member of the year awards throughout her career, as well as an Administrator of the Year recognition and an Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. Dr. Ryan first studied as a Spanish language teacher at Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she earned a BA in 1975. Following this accomplishment, she subsequently attended the University of South Carolina, where she earned an MEd in higher education in 1989 and an EdD in curriculum and instruction in 1994. Dr. Ryan attributes her success to her dedicated work ethic, as well as her longevity in the field. Looking ahead, she hopes to travel widely and see more of the world in the years to come.
