As a member of the conducting staff of the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Mr. Fagen conducted performances of “Don Carlo,” “Trovatore,” “Ghosts of Versailles” and “The Dybbuk.” He has also excelled as a principal conductor in Kassel and Brunswick and at the Flanders Opera of Antwerp and Ghent. He was the music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra, the Dortmund Opera and the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, which he toured with in “The Concertgebouw,” Salzburg, Shanghai and Beijing. Since 2008, he has been a co-chair and professor of conducting at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Mr. Fagen has conducted at many of the world’s most important opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, Staatsoper Berlin at the invitation of Daniel Barenboim, Teatro Real Madrid and Teatro Regio Torino. He has recorded symphonic repertoire extensively for Naxos, the Bavarian Radio, WDR and BMG, including a revival of William Levi Dawson’s “Negro Folk Symphony” — leading to a resurgence of interest in the composer’s works — and commissioned and conducted an original opera based on “The Diary of Anne Frank” in 2022. Mr. Fagen is known for his unique conducting style, which prioritizes bringing the composer’s intent to life while interpreting each piece with respect to its core “truths.” Crediting his long-term success to his perseverance, he underscores that hard work, dedication and luck helped him throughout his career. He was featured in a PBS documentary discussing his first-place victory in the 1976 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Conductors Competition and has won several prizes in international conductors’ competitions. Arthur Fagen is a celebrated conductor and professor of music who has served as the music director for the Atlanta Opera since 2010. As of 2024, he has assumed the title of music director emeritus. A naturally gifted musician, he made his debut at the age of 22 at the Frankfurt Opera.
