Appalled by the attitude of some music critics, who she found very condescending toward composers, she contemplated how to help artists receive greater exposure from the general public. Shortly thereafter, she founded her business. Attributing her success to her curiosity and mission-driven focus, Ms. Scales has long drawn inspiration from the words of her mother, who taught her to try and make the world a better place. To wit, she has worked tirelessly throughout her career to underline the essential nature of art in the creation of a universal community. Looking toward the future, Ms. Scales aspires to continue working on various creative projects, engage with the emerging champions of new musical works, and support the great talents and artists she meets along the way. Leveraging over four decades of experience in the arts and entertainment, Barbara Scales has distinguished herself as the founder and president of Latitude 45 Arts Inc. since 1981. Based in Montreal, Quebec, a booking agency and management company celebrates the musical gifts of performers from around the world, currently representing approximately 50 artists working at the highest level of creativity, engagement and courage in the field. Well-regarded for her unique insights into what music means to international audiences, Ms. Scales was previously hailed as the Artist Manager of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenting Association in 2008 and recognized for engagement by the International Society for the Performing Arts in 2010, the Canadian Music Centre in 2012, and CINARS in 2014. Growing up in New York, Ms. Scales became deeply involved in the arts, music, modern dance and ballet scenes. After taking an integrative arts course, where she learned about the social history of various mediums, she was struck by the connection between music and art.
