Known for his steady hand, knowledge of anatomy, and intrinsic sense of balance, Dr. Smith has focused much of his research and practice on plastic surgery over the course of his career. Initially studying at Ursinus College and earning a BS in 1962, Dr. Smith later attended the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, where he attained an MD in 1966. Following this accomplishment, he completed residencies at the University of Pennsylvania’s graduate hospital and the Geisinger Medical Center, where he became chief resident in general surgery. He also joined the Milton E. Hershey Medical Center of The Pennsylvania State University, focusing on plastic surgery until 1976. Dr. Smith subsequently joined the staff at both Reading Hospital and the Community General Hospital, which was later acquired by the St. Joseph Medical Center. He went on to hold positions of leadership in plastic surgery at both St. Joseph and Reading Hospital throughout the 1980s and 1990s, during which time he also operated in private practice. In addition to his most recent roles of leadership and teaching, Dr. Smith also operated as the medical director for Reading Hospital’s Wound Care Center in 2016. Well-regarded for his impressive longevity in the industry, Dr. Smith is a lifetime member and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also counts himself as a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society and the Lipoplasty Society of North America. As of December 2023, he is also a member of The American Legion. The Berks County Medical Society also honored him with a 50-Year Achievement Award in 2017 and 2018. Dr. Raymond L. Smith leverages over 55 years of experience in his current role as an assistant professor of surgery at the Drexel University School of Medicine. Affiliated with the Tower Health division, he simultaneously serves as chief of the Hyperbaric Center & Wound Care Division at the Tower Health Reading Hospital RAYMOND L.
