489 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Working primarily for the Jefferson Center’s crisis center, Mr. Coley is responsible for performing screenings and physical assessments for patients experiencing acute mental health issues. Mr. Coley initially became involved in the health care profession in light of his desire to help others. While serving as a medic in the United States Army, he studied nursing at the Rutgers University School of Nursing, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1983. Following this accomplishment, he went on to join the U.S. Navy as a nurse, and he later served with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps for more than a decade, during which time he was attached to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. After retiring at the rank of commander, Mr. Coley subsequently worked as the assistant director of nursing at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He subsequently operated as a hospice nurse in Kentucky and Colorado, after which he delved into his current endeavors. Outside of his primary service in nursing, Mr. Coley has remained active as a civic-minded citizen in his community, working alongside the Jefferson and Gilpin County Community Crisis Teams and as an elder at his local Presbyterian church. Mr. Coley is particularly proud of the longevity of his career, including his recent efforts in providing critical care to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fearless in the face of new possibilities, he has gladly seized every opportunity offered to him and learned to value the knowledge and experiences of others over the course of his career. Looking toward the future, Mr. Coley hopes to gradually step back from his current responsibilities and engage in more consultative or volunteer work. H aving dedicated more than 45 years of excellence to those in need, Russell M. Coley serves as a registered nurse at the Jefferson Center for Mental Health. In this role, he leverages a wealth of expertise in mental health services, hospice care, correctional nursing, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and health care administration. RUSSELL M.
