451 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY An accomplished social worker and military veteran, Karen Marie Fussell is proud to celebrate 40 years in her field. Entering the United States Navy in 1983, she served as a seaman until her honorable discharge in 1990. During her service, she was employed as the chief of social work at the Heartland Health Care Center-Dearborn Heights, a senior living center in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, from 1977 to 1989. She has otherwise operated as a geriatric social worker at the Heartland Health Care Center since 1976, and she takes pride in the health care and service she provides to the residents. In addition to social work, Ms. Fussell has been a member of the security police at Battle Creek VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan, since 1991. Furthermore, she has been a security worker with Prudential Security since 2020, a position that allows her to continue practicing the discipline and diligence that was imparted to her in the Navy. Ms. Fussell enjoys giving back to her community through volunteer work and outreach, having volunteered with 67 Army-affiliated programs, including Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services (now MILWomen), where she has served as the master-at-arms since 1968. For her military accomplishments, Ms. Fussell won two medals and two trophies from the U.S. Navy. In addition, she has been recognized as a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Leader and is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also a member of numerous organizations, such as the American Massage Therapy Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club (DAV), the Sabana Seca Players’ Club and The American Legion. Though the military has been a steady influence throughout her life, Ms. Fussell attributes her success to the guidance of her late mother, Bessie, who encouraged her to pursue a career in helping others.
