Outside of her primary efforts, Ms. Harris is one of three ambassadors for the Military Women’s Memorial, the only such memorial site that recognizes women and their services from the Revolutionary War to the present. Other undertakings to her credit include her leadership in helping to push the Deborah Sampson Act, which was passed in 2021 by Congress in order to support women’s health care and various Veterans Affairs programs. Well-regarded for her accomplishments, Ms. Harris was recognized as the San Diego Navy League Woman of the Year in 2001, and she received the Legion of Merit in 2012. Additionally, the Military Women’s Memorial bestowed her with a Certificate of Achievement in 2023. Looking ahead, Ms. Harris hopes to continue helping women fully integrate into the military and making an impact on women and children nationwide. Driven by her desire to serve on behalf of others, Octavia D. Harris has earned acclaim through her work as a sub-committee chair of the Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. Acting as an advisory body to the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the committee advocates for the inclusion of women within the armed forces, including special operations, pilot programs, submarine warfare, tank operations and combat field operations. To wit, Ms. Harris brings to bear a wealth of expertise in personnel management, leadership and outreach and engagement. Ms. Harris previously lent more than three decades of service to the United States Navy, spanning from 1982 until 2012. During this time, she served as a senior advisor to the commander of Amphibious Squadron 1 from 2002 to 2005, and she was a human resource manager between 2005 and 2008. Following this period, she advanced to the rank of command master chief of the USS Pinckney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, from 2008 to 2010. She subsequently held the same role with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command until her retirement in 2012, after which she worked as a OCTAVIA D.
