692 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY Dr. Paul T. Rygiewicz enjoyed a fulfilling career in the field of microbiology spanning more than three decades. Focusing much of his attention on the study of ecologically oriented microbial and plant physiology, he served as a research ecologist and project leader on global climate change for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 1985 until his retirement in 2017. Dr. Rygiewicz initially studied forestry at the University of Illinois, where he earned a BS in 1974. Following this accomplishment, he went on to the University of California, Berkeley and graduated with a master’s degree in wood science in 1976. Dr. Rygiewicz concluded his academic efforts at the University of Washington, where he achieved a PhD in forest resources in 1983. First serving as a research technologist for Rayonier Inc., a timberland real estate investment trust, Dr. Rygiewicz subsequently joined the Centre National De Recherches Forestières as a research associate between 1983 and 1984. In the years following, he studied soil microbiology in a research capacity at the University of California Berkeley from 1984 to 1985, whereupon he accepted his final role with the EPA. Known for his scholarly output as well, Dr. Rygiewicz is proud of his contributions to a significant study on the impact of climate change on the West Coast Douglas fir. The project involved the creation of an outdoor growing system that included above and below-ground structures and a meteorological tower, allowing the team to accurately replicate the current climate in real-time. By increasing carbon dioxide levels and temperature to simulate future climate conditions, they were able to study how trees reacted over a period of five years. Other achievements to Dr. Rygiewicz’s credit include winning an EPA Administrator Award, as well as several other accolades, including awards from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Institute of Agricultural Research in France.
