After a residency in pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, he pursued additional postgraduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, where he achieved him a PhD in experimental pathology in 1977. He returned to the school in the late 1990s to better support his leadership goals, earning an MBA. Dr. Singh serves as the Walter L. Shepherd chair of clinical pathology and vice chair of clinical affairs of the pathology department at Augusta University Medical College of Georgia. He is best known for his research in the genetics of multiple myeloma and was responsible for identifying a subtype of the cancer and codifying its diagnostic criteria. Prior to joining Augusta University, Dr. Singh served as medical director of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Heritage Lab Services and spent more than 25 years as the president of clinical support for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He is the former chief medical officer of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Pittsburgh and has been recognized for his excellence in leadership and clinical practice with numerous awards. Throughout his career, Dr. Singh has taught pathology at institutions including the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Medical College of Georgia, and he is proud to have led several of his student laboratory assistants to pursue careers in medicine. He looks forward to continuing his research and improving the lives of patients and hopes to begin work on a book about growing up in Punjab, India. D r. Gurmukh Singh is a board-certified pathologist and celebrated clinical researcher and medical administrator who celebrates more than 50 years of discovery in immunopathology.
