In 2006, he achieved a joint MD and PhD in medicine, genetics and molecular biology under the auspices of Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, supported by an NIH Medical Scientist Training Program fellowship. During this time, he became a top champion on Jeopardy!, featured on five shows and the Tournament of Champions. In his capacity as a leading bioinformatics expert, Dr. Ulm’s efforts help structure and organize the flow of information in biomedical research, genomics and translational medicine. His work has facilitated bench-to-bedside discoveries in many diverse domains, including gene therapy and drug repurposing for muscular dystrophy and COVID-19, for which he has published widely cited papers and been recognized for his landmark contributions. In addition to his medical and scientific achievements, Dr. Ulm is a linguist with professional experience in multiple languages, a published novelist, and the founder, guitarist and lead singer-songwriter for the Kant’s Konundrum alternative rock band. His band has created award-winning songs and music videos, with a new EP and singles on track for release in 2024. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, he is of German, Danish, English, Scottish-Irish, and partial French, Ashkenazi Jewish, and Swiss ancestry. Dr. J. Wes Ulm is a bioinformatic scientific resource analyst, biomedical data specialist, and medical researcher whose work has yielded breakthroughs in drug repurposing, gene therapy and other cutting-edge fields.
