There, he created analytical test methods and designed a quality assurance program that has been in use since 1987. Another accomplishment is his development of the J Flag, which he named after his son, Gary K. Ward Jr. During the Beijing Olympics, Mr. Ward’s expertise was requested, and he traveled to China to ensure the athletes had access to clean water. As a scientist, Mr. Ward has published more than 150 papers on topics within his field. Currently, he has branched out into cannabis testing, where he ranks among the top 20 experts studying the subject. When considering his future, he plans to continue consulting and working with laboratories. Mr. Ward is grateful for both the work and the relationships he has cultivated with his professional peers. Now more than ever, he feels it is important to safeguard the environment. Passionate about the environment and its preservation, Gary K. Ward achieved success as an oceanographic and chemistry consultant, boasting a nearly five-decade career. To pursue his interest in chemistry and the environment, he learned how to scuba dive and studied chemical oceanography, the only environmental course available at the time. After obtaining a master’s degree in chemical oceanography from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, Mr. Ward built an impressive resume in the field of environmental protection. For five years, Mr. Ward worked for the NOAA directing three oceanographic laboratories, and for another 10 years, he operated with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where he established new laboratory, audit and quality control systems. He also managed the agency’s Contract Laboratory Program, overseeing 107 laboratories analyzing approximately 100,000 samples per year. Leaving the EPA to work for Underwriters Laboratories, he progressed his professional experience before joining Intertek as a laboratory director, where he managed a total of 257 laboratories worldwide. After eight years at Columbia Analytical Services, he was administrator of Oregon's Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program.
