711 Millennium - Seventeenth Edition SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Jess Sewell Bowen III leverages over five decades of experience as an expert in funeral home management. Now retired from full-time work, he previously operated as the owner and manager of the Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Tennessee from 1969 to 2021; today, he continues to serve as an advisor and embalmer for the esteemed local organization in a limited capacity. During his time in his leadership position, Mr. Bowen oversaw a variety of managerial and personnel duties, in addition to embalming remains, handling funeral and burial arrangements with families, and conducting funeral and burial services and cremations. Prior to taking on the ownership of his funeral home enterprise, Mr. Bowen worked as a funeral assistant for Mann Mortuary in Knoxville, Tennessee, between 1967 and 1968 while he was pursuing a higher education. He originally studied mortuary science at the John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science (now John A. Gupton College) and later achieved a BS in business at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1969. In addition to his academic credentials, Mr. Bowen is also fully licensed as a funeral director and embalmer, as recognized by the Tennessee State Board of Funeral Directors, Embalmers & Burial Services. Ever committed to his profession, Mr. Bowen maintains his affiliation with the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association, having formerly served the group as its president between 1986 and 1987. He also remains dedicated to civic advocacy, notably participating as a volunteer and donor with several noteworthy brands, including the City of Waverly Citizens Safety Advisory Committee, The American National Red Cross and the Humphreys County Election Commission. Furthermore, Mr. Bowen is a chairman for the Humphreys County 911 Board. He is also a 50-year, third generation mason in the Waverly Lodge #304, as well as a Scottish Rite and Shriner. To commemorate his achievements, Mr. Bowen has been honored with several accolades, including a Certificate of Appreciation from the Humphreys County Chamber of Commerce. Attributing much of his success to his dedication to his profession and the support of his family, friends and community, he is grateful for all of his professional experiences.
