718 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Now active as a self-employed journalist and writer, Mr. Fowler dedicates much of his time to editing his sermons and writing book reviews and articles for local newspapers. Well-studied in the American Civil War as well, he was published locally in the 1980s on the subject of letters written by a Civil War-era soldier. Mr. Fowler was invited to deliver six devotional messages to attendees at Civil War Week in Chautauqua, New York. The Oxford Roundtable invited him to read a paper entitled “Identifying the Better Angels of our Nature.” Mr. Fowler’s successful ventures in life can be attributed to his sensitive response to the spirit of God, his vast knowledge and his passion for sharing it. Among his most cherished accomplishments, he is particularly proud to have helped many individuals deal with the challenges in their lives, ultimately aiding them in overcoming the obstacles holding them back. Long devoted to religious service, the Rev. William J. Fowler is now retired from his career as a minister of the United Methodist Church, through which he served congregations in Scotland, Virginia and Tennessee. He was instrumental in expanding overall membership and worship attendance, proclaiming the Gospel via televised sermons, administering mission projects, and overseeing the repair and renovation of various religious facilities. Among his contributions to the United Methodist faith, Mr. Fowler notably led the Holston Annual Conference in celebration of the bicentennial of Methodism in America in 1984. Initially torn between working with the clergy versus a career in education, Mr. Fowler ultimately decided to serve as a religious leader in order to help others. This was a conscious response to the chaos of the 1960s, when violence and hatred ran rampant throughout the world. Following his retirement in 2008, he returned to his original aspirations in academia and taught Bible, western civilization, Russian and Soviet history to students at Hiwassee College. Mr. Fowler also served as a pastor at two small United Methodist churches in Rockwood and Midtown Valley from 2014 until 2019. REV. WILLIAM J. FOWLER UNITED METHODIST PASTOR (RETIRED) Kingston, TN
