724 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Karla Bonkowski Magnan, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist with more than 25 years in private practice specializing in trauma. For much of the 1990s, Ms. Magnan worked with children in clinical, social service and specialized classroom settings. As part of her vocational journey, she achieved an MSW at the Aurora University George Williams School of Social Work in 2000, following an internship with the Metropolitan Family Services adoption and guardianship preservation program. She also received an MA from DePaul University in 1997. Ms. Magnan continued to serve children in the family court system as a court mediator for DuPage County Psychological Services. Likewise, she operated as a therapist and director of supervised visitation at the Myrtle Burks Center, where she would remain on staff for 17 years. Since 1997, she has seen clients of all ages in private practice, with an emphasis on diverse treatment modalities addressing trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Adjacent to her professional endeavors, Ms. Magnan has maintained a plethora lifelong creative pursuits, having notably established herself as a dancer, composer, choreographer, singer and songwriter. To wit, she has recorded an album, “Unadorned,” as Karla Sue and the Very Blue, in addition to overseeing projects as diverse as the HIV PSA song “Test Negative” for the Art Institute of Chicago. She also wrote “Sacred Journey of the Heart,” the award-winning title song to a film of the same name. A certified yoga teacher as well, Ms. Magnan has written numerous articles and essays on her yoga journey and recently created a therapeutic movement discipline, Bhavana YogaDance, based on her experience. A published author as well, she wrote “This Road Leads Home to Me,” and she looks forward to publishing a poetry collection, tentatively titled “Widow,” in the near future. Ms. Magnan has also appeared on three self-help podcasts and participated in her first public speaking event for a panel discussion with e360tv in spring 2024.
