Perera is a nonprofit leader, educator and career coach with more than a decade of success in recruiting and program management. Raised by first-generation Cuban immigrants who found success in small business ownership, he learned the value of education and hard work at a young age. Mr. Perera holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology with minors in education and family, youth, and community sciences from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University, and he has pursued extensive professional development throughout his career. He began his career as a student program leader and coordinator for the University of Florida and Bowling Green State University, which instilled in him an understanding of the transformative potential of student leadership and internship training and a desire to use his career to effect positive change. After branching out to corporate recruiting roles with tech-sector companies including Uber and Slack, he returned to the nonprofit world as a program success manager and career coach for Merit America in 2023. Today, Mr. Perera helps execute the organization’s mission to offer career training, professional development, and job placement to clients from underserved communities by facilitating a 16-week class that includes large and small group learning, resume writing, and interview preparation. Mr. Perera has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his commitment to community development and career readiness. He credits his success to his early experiences in higher education and looks forward to continuing to grow.
