738 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SOCIAL SERVICES AND NONPROFIT Driven to lead others along the path toward self-actualization, Lori Tsugawa Whaley has found success as a life coach and public speaker since 2008. Drawing from her Japanese heritage and the code of Bushido, she works to unlock the inner strength of her clients through adherence to the principles of ancient samurai culture. Well-regarded for her wisdom, she has appeared before a wide variety of audiences over the course of her career, encompassing two TEDx talks, life skills training with prison inmates, addressing business executives at the Project Management Institute, and speaking engagements with Humanities Washington. Ms. Whaley has always harbored a fascination for her Asian heritage. After experiencing two traumatic brain injuries, she struggled with chronic pain and cognitive difficulties, the latter of which affected her reading comprehension. Unwilling to let this stop her, she found inspiration in the culture, arts and tea ceremonies of the samurai, as well as their principles of courage, integrity and benevolence. Utilizing these values toward developing a prosperous career as a life coach, Ms. Whaley also realized her lifelong ambition of becoming a published author. In 2016, she released “The Courage of a Samurai: Seven Sword-Sharp Principles for Success,” which expounds upon the modern applications of the Bushido code. Outside of her achievements of authoring her first book and succeeding as a public speaker, Ms. Whaley is proud of her diligent work in closing the cultural divide between the United States and Japan. She has been a member of the U.S.-Japan Council since 2015, and she has contributed to the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, the JapanAmerica Society of the State of Washington, and the Japanese American Citizens League, among many other organizations. In accounting for her success, she largely credits the influence of her parents, who taught her to work hard and to exercise perseverance in all things. In the coming years, Ms. Whaley aspires to continue taking her clients to Japan and to immerse herself even further in her ancestral culture.
