In 1997, Dr. Wilburn joined LeMoyne-Owen College, where she served for 10 years in various capacities, including as the director of international studies, chair of the Division of Education, and founder of Global Village Child Development and Family Studies — their Early Childhood Lab School. She began a 15-year affiliation with Whitworth University in 2007, operating as an associate dean and director of graduate studies in education and diversity initiatives while also establishing the school’s Center for Marriage and Family Therapy before her first retirement in 2020. After six months, she was recruited back as an interim chief diversity officer, building on her understanding of institutional needs and culture and her expertise in driving inclusive policy and academic administration. Since 2018, Dr. Wilburn has offered dynamic insights to clients on a consultant basis as the founding president of Wilburn & Associates LLC, a firm providing coaching, training and educational services for institutions looking to transform their approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She developed The R.E.A.L. DEI Framework, a comprehensive model for implementing diversity initiatives to assist with this process. She considers her work to be a calling supported by her faith and family, particularly her husband, and daughter. Dr. Wilburn’s work has been honored with numerous accolades, including the 2016 Women of Achievement Carl Maxey Racial and Social Justice Award and a 2017 Insight to Diversity Giving Back Award. She also received a 2023 certificate from the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education Administration in recognition of her service on its national advisory council. Dr. Roberta J. Wilburn has dedicated over 35 years to fostering crosscultural connections and empowering others to succeed as an educator and diversity consultant. Drawn to a career in education from an early age, she began teaching Sunday school as a teenager and studied education at Mount Holyoke College, graduating cum laude with a BA.
