Soon after graduating, Mr. O’Brien joined the pharmaceutical industry as a market research analyst and primary care and hospital sales representative for the Upjohn Company of Canada. In 1996, he began working at AstraZeneca, rising from executive director of specialty products to global leader for the thennew drug Seroquel by 1999. While overseeing the launch of Seroquel, he and his team built the market share for the medication from $110 million to over $5.6 billion in revenue, surpassing its two competitor products. He continued his upward trajectory in the company, becoming executive director of the oncology department in 2001 and vice president of the respiratory and inflammation business unit in 2002. He parted ways with AstraZeneca in 2004 as the vice president of commercial operations and emerging brands. After leaving AstraZeneca, Mr. O’Brien has held several executive and board director positions at pharmaceutical companies such as Solstice Neurosciences, Profectus BioSciences Inc., Cyrano Nasal Science LLC and Genomind. Since 2022, he has served as the chief executive officer and managing director of Mayne Pharma and the chair of SFA Therapeutics. In addition, he has been an advisory board member with Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress since 2009 and with Schoemaker Classic for Melmark since 2007, as well as chair of Key BioPharma Partners since 2008. Moving forward, Mr. O’Brien hopes to continue in the pharmaceutical industry, and he is proud to have spent his career developing medications that provide life-changing relief for patients and their families. In his spare time, he enjoys waterskiing, sailing, and playing ice hockey. Shawn Patrick O’Brien has enjoyed a successful career in the pharmaceutics and biotechnology industries, developing a reputation for patientcentered management.
