248 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY Inspired by his stepfather’s service in World War II, David D. Kirtley dreamed of a career in the military. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve at 18 years old in 1960 and dedicated 40 years to serving his country. Though he initially joined the Marine Corps Reserve, he quickly transitioned to an active-duty position in the Air Force, where he served for much of his career. He retired in 2000 at the rank of brigadier general after an extensive career in communications. Now well into his retirement, he looks back on his years of service with pride and gratitude. While in the Air Force, Mr. Kirtley trained in communications and learned cryptography, providing additional services as an emergency medical technician (EMT). As an EMT, he successfully delivered five infants and is honored to have had the opportunity to assist others in a diverse range of roles. For his exemplary performance, he received the Legion of Merit from the Air Force. In addition to his active-duty Air Force service, Mr. Kirtley was a proud member of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard and served the city of Jackson, Mississippi, as a police officer after returning to civilian life. He has deep ties to the city and holds a bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University. Mr. Kirtley attributes his success to a dedication to his duties and hard work and advises those aspiring to join the military to “Do the best you can in whatever position you fulfill.” Thinking forward to the future, he hopes to continue connecting with past colleagues and other important people in his life.
