272 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Arthur Franklin Gelb aspired to become a doctor out of a desire to help others and a passion for medical science. Inspired by his family’s legacy at the school, he attended Vanderbilt University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry. Dr. Gelb continued his education at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1967. To further his medical career, he completed a residency in pulmonary diseases at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center and a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, Cardiovascular Research Institute. Since 1974, Dr. Gelb has served as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California Los Angeles Geffen School of Medicine and has seen patients as a pulmonologist for the Lakewood Regional Medical Center. He considers the greatest accomplishment of his career to have been continuously helping patients regardless of whether they paid for care. To better understand the mechanisms of diseases, he trained with world leaders in the field of disease research and treatment, including Dr. Arlette Colchen. Dr. Gelb has contributed over 130 research articles and publications to professional journals in the field of pulmonary disease. He is a former member of the editorial board for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and frequently reviews work for publications such as the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Journal of Applied Physiology. Dr. Gelb credits his success to his hard work and the inspiration of his accomplished family members. His family’s ties to New York City date back generations, with a notable lineage including his uncle, Saul Gelb, an attorney general of New York appointed by President Richard Nixon as a federal judge. In the future, Dr. Gelb intends to continue working and has no plans to retire. He hopes to serve the Lakewood Regional Medical Center for many more years.
