281 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Elsie S. Mainali began her career in clinical neonatology at Virginia Commonwealth University as an academic clinical scientist in 1999. She transitioned to the management aspect of clinical neonatology in 2007 and served as the medical director of Physicians’ Group Practice until 2023. She continues to focus on clinical team coaching through her own company, working to build a cohesive teamwork mindset to increase patient safety and positive health outcomes. Before moving into health care leadership, Dr. Mainali was a leading academic figure in her specialty. She earned an MD at Manila Central University in the Philippines in 1984 and a PhD in medical sciences with a focus on immunology at Texas A&M University in 1992. She went on to complete a residency in pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, in 1995 and a neonatology fellowship at the Children National Medical Center in Washington, DC, in 1998. Throughout her career, Dr. Mainali has pursued additional development and management for personnel in clinical settings. Dr. Mainali has found her niche in coaching professionals, especially among neonatologists and other intensivists in medical settings. She is certified by the American Academy of Medical Colleges to lead group coaching sessions, through which she promotes team collaboration and effective communication by recognizing essential individual and organizational behavior. This helps to reform teams to be highly functional and more harmonious and to produce positive and high-quality outcomes. Currently, Dr. Mainali is forming a nonprofit organization to help Nepalese youth learn skills to preserve the nation’s culture. She chose to focus on Nepal because of the difficulties the country has faced in providing opportunities for young people. As a result, many sought jobs overseas, negatively impacting Nepal’s local workforce and family culture caused by prolonged separation. During a recent visit, she discovered a local organization restoring art that had been destroyed or stolen during a recent earthquake. The organization is training local youth to refurbish the art, and Dr. Mainali plans to support this organization and others like it by raising awareness and funds through her nonprofit organization.
