283 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Cheryl McCune is a registered nurse celebrating more than 20 years of service to her patients and community. Before entering the health care industry, she enjoyed a successful career in commercial art and advertising, and explored entrepreneurship opportunities, opening an auto repair shop. Following major life changes, Ms. McCune struggled to find opportunities that matched her skills. She decided to take a training class for certified nursing assistant (CNA) licensure, where her instructors quickly recognized her talent for the work and recommended she continue on the path toward becoming a registered nurse. Ms. McCune holds a Bachelor of Arts in commercial art and advertising and an associate degree in nursing from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. Ms. McCune began her career as a medical and surgical nurse at Crossing Rivers Health and then worked in a large intensive care unit at Skemp Mayo Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin, before moving to her current position. She now serves as an intensive care unit coordinator for Crossing Rivers Health. She is proud to have found success in nursing as a nontraditional student who began her training at age 44. Ms. McCune has also merged her commercial art background with her nursing role to develop patient education materials for the hospital, allowing her to put all her talents to use. In recognition of her commitment, Ms. McCune was honored as the Nurse of the Year in 2013 by Crossing Rivers and has received service awards for 10, 15 and 20 years in practice. She looks forward to continuing her clinical work for as long as possible. Ms. McCune credits her success to hard work, persistence, and belief in herself and the value of her goals. She emphasizes that anyone can achieve their dreams with careful planning and dedication, and she is grateful for the support of her family throughout her journey. In her personal time, Ms. McCune is an accomplished runner who enjoys a variety of outdoor sports and plays saxophone in a three-piece band.
