295 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS of scientific affairs and clinical education for Kimberly-Clark Health Care. In 2015, she founded Truscott MedSci Associates LLC, and five years later, she co-founded Shield Technology Inc., a medical device development and manufacturing company devoted to addressing unmet patient and medical staff needs. In 1989, Dr. Truscott worked with the FDA’s Science and Technology group to develop a practical test method for determining if medical gloves were protective against permeation by the AIDs virus and then worked with standards committees to set appropriate medical glove permeation standards. Shortly thereafter, reports of serious allergic reactions from natural rubber latex (NRL) gloves were reported. Dr. Truscott went to Malaysia to collect samples at every stage of rubber tree tapping, processing, compounding and production of NRL gloves. While there, she was contacted by the FDA and CDC to join research efforts and share collected samples. Dr. Truscott then returned to Baxter and worked with the manufacturing team to determine practical methods for reducing proteins from gloves. Extensive efforts were undertaken to expose serious patient and staff complications caused by glove powder with or without proteins. After 15 years of effort from all involved, the FDA banned powder from all medical gloves in the United States. In light of her scientific expertise, Dr. Truscott was appointed as a representative of U.S. interests in the development of the European Union’s medical device requirements. She is grateful for the support of the scientific community following her appointment to the position. Dr. Truscott earned a bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University and a PhD in comparative pathology at the University of California Davis School of Medicine with emphasis in microbiology and immunology. With over 35 years of experience, Dr. Wava Truscott is a passionate expert in microbiology, immunology and infection prevention. She previously excelled as a laboratory technologist at MIDECO Laboratory, manager of Baxter Pharmaseal biological laboratories, vice president of regulatory and scientific affairs for the Safe Skin Corporation, and director WAVA TRUSCOTT, PHD DIRECTOR OF REGULATORY AFFAIRS AND CLINICAL EDUCATION, SHIELD TECHNOLOGY INC.
