205 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition FINANCE AND INSURANCE Martin F. Baumann, CPA, has enjoyed more than 40 years of success as an accounting and financial services executive. He holds a BA in accounting from Queens College and an MBA from Baruch College and established himself quickly as a rising leader in his field. In 1980 he became a partner at Price Waterhouse (later PwC) while in his early 30s. Mr. Baumann became a senior partner in the firm, representing high-profile clients such as Chase Manhattan Bank, The World Bank, Mastercard and Prudential Insurance. Rising to deputy chairman in the financial services practice, he was responsible for PwC’s global banking business until his departure in 2003. He was recruited by the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), as chief financial officer during a period of crisis for the company and led the financial reforms to restore Congressional, investor and regulatory confidence. On several occasions, he testified before Congress about the reforms he led at Freddie Mac, leading the $2 trillion company into a new era. After leaving Freddie Mac in 2006, Mr. Baumann joined the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) as the director of the office of research and analysis. He was appointed chief auditor and director of professional standards at the PCAOB in 2009 and led landmark improvements in the work of audit firms until stepping down in 2018. Shortly after leaving the PCAOB, Mr. Baumann accepted a position as an adjunct professor for accounting and public policy at The Washington Campus, a unique educational institution for MBA and MAcc students from top U.S. colleges, and he recently became an adjunct professor of accounting at Southern New Hampshire University. He hopes to share with his students the knowledge he has gained over many years as a partner, chief financial officer and financial regulator, providing them with the opportunity to learn from an industry expert. He enjoys giving back through teaching and philanthropic outreach and serves as vice chair of the board of AmpleHarvest.org, a national nonprofit organization seeking to end food insecurity and waste.
