As a health maintenance organization (HMO), Health Alliance Plan faced unique challenges, as no standard rules for these organizations existed at that time. In the early 2000s, industry regulators and state insurance commissioners finalized a single set of rules for all HMOs, and Mr. Curry became instrumental in ensuring the company's compliance with the new insurance accounting and reporting rules. Concurrent with the rule changes, he implemented risk-based capital reporting, a new and crucial reporting structure. Moving forward, Mr. Curry aims to focus less on full-time accounting and more on consulting in order to pursue more of his passions; while he has excelled in accounting, he is keen to pursue other activities that truly resonate with him. To wit, he is passionate about music and aims to find a balance between his career and personal pursuits that allows him to explore the many wonderful opportunities life has to offer. Over a nearly four-decade career, Roderick Irwin Curry has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his work in accounting. As the lead statutory accountant for Health Alliance Plan of Michigan since 1996, he is responsible for reviewing current updates to accounting rules and regulations and monitoring industry developments. He prepares various filings throughout the year, including annual and quarterly statements, and he oversees reporting for a separate insurance subsidiary. Mr. Curry received a BS in accounting with a minor in finance from Michigan State University in 1985, where he also served as a teaching assistant for accounting principles courses. He also holds an associate degree, magna cum laude, from Henry Ford Community College. He began his career as a staff accountant for Coopers and Lybrand (currently Price Waterhouse Coopers) and laid the groundwork for an insurance career at The Auto Club Insurance Group from 1988 to 1996. Mr. Curry is proud to operate at the forefront of building Health Alliance Plan’s statutory reporting function into its current modern and efficient system.
