As a doctor and soldier, he was deployed with the 874th forward surgical team in Kirkuk, Iraq, on the frontlines of Operation Iraqi Freedom and later worked with the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Wurtsburg, Germany. With the introduction of Tricare, a healthcare plan for military beneficiaries, many military training hospitals reduced their patient volume, so Dr. Obney and other cardiac surgeons were sent to Veterans’ Affairs (VA) hospitals to work. Embracing the change, he worked at a VA hospital in Tampa, Florida, for six years, serving as the section chief of cardiac surgery while also teaching at the University of South Florida. After moving to Texas and entering private practice, Dr. Obney began working at United Regional Healthcare System, where he remained for almost 10 years as the section chief and later as the deputy chief of the surgery department. Currently, he is a staff cardiothoracic surgeon for Mount Carmel Medical Group and a staff physician at Fairfield Medical Center. In addition to his medical credentials, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Jurisprudence in healthcare law, policy and management from Texas A&M University. While working at Mount Carmel, Dr. Obney underwent nine months of training in robotic surgery to advance his skills and later initiated a program for robotic lung surgery, continuing the same program at Fairfield Medical Center. He is committed to furthering himself as a doctor and continuing his career in medicine for many years to come. Joining the army the United States Army as a young man, Dr. James A. Obney used the Healthcare Scholarship Program to attend medical school, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in 1993 and completing a residency at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston.
