319 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT Ms. Chawla initially pursued a higher education at the University of Delhi, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English literature before receiving a postgraduate diploma in public relations from the Rajendra Prasad Institute of Communication and Management in 1999. In the U.S., she pursued a Juris Doctor at the Birmingham School of Law, graduating in 2006. Entering the field proper, she began working as an independent lawyer before serving as a judicial assistant to the Honorable Eugene R. Verin in the circuit court of Jefferson County. Since 2014, she has operated her own law firm, Pooja Chawla PC, providing legal aid to low-income families. Previously, Ms. Chawla served as a co-chair of the Alabama State Bar Association, working to expand pro bono services. She has also been a member of the Board of Trustees for the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham for approximately six years, actively contributing to the organization’s efforts. Additionally, she established a contract with Legal Aid Services of Alabama, allowing her to provide legal services and pro bono work to those in need. She remains committed to assisting individuals who cannot afford legal fees and works diligently to engage in this important aspect of her industry. Looking to the future, Ms. Chawla plans to focus on appellate work. After sustaining a serious leg injury, she was forced to take a step back from many aspects of her career, including pro bono representation, but now that her recovery has entered a period of stability, she is excited to return to this line of work. Growing up in India, Pooja Chawla witnessed and experienced discrimination and injustice. When she immigrated to the United States and learned of practices such as legal aid and pro bono work, she delved into the field of law to provide meaningful service to those in need of representation.
