During his second summer at the William & Mary Law School, Mr. Connell received a job offer from the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Las Vegas. After completing a Juris Doctor in 1996, he began representing clients in small cases and gained a deep passion for criminal defense. For the past 25 years, he has focused on working with defendants facing serious charges and considers it a great honor to stand between his clients and the might of the state. Mr. Connell is currently a student at the Berklee College of Music, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in music business in the hopes of expanding his legal practice to work with musicians and other creatives. As a lawyer, James G. Connell III has worked tirelessly to hold the U.S. government to its own standards of democracy and due process. He is well known for his efforts to challenge U.S. policy on Guantanamo Bay, a project he began in 2008 and that has led to collaborations with four presidential administrations. Mr. Connell serves as learned council for the Military Commissions Defense Organization, leading a joint military-civilian multidisciplinary team in defending a Guantanamo Bay prisoner against death penalty charges. Under a military general and alongside several military colleagues, he supervises a team of approximately 25 people, coordinating tasks, ensuring fair treatment and facilitating career development by providing necessary resources. In addition, his job duties include conducting investigations, drafting and conducting research. Born into a military family, Mr. Connell is the first attorney in his family.
