She holds a Bachelor of Science in cognitive neuroscience from the University of California San Diego and was inspired to pursue law by her experiences becoming her mother’s legal guardian at a young age. Ms. Smith was awarded a Juris Doctor by the Santa Clara University School of Law in 2014, following internships with the South County Courthouse family law facilitator and clerkships with the San Diego, Santa Clara, and San Francisco district attorney’s offices. In 2015, she became a deputy district attorney for the Napa District Attorney’s office, followed by three years as a deputy district attorney for Sonoma County. Since 2019, she has been a senior attorney at the family law practice Magdalena Law Group. She is a member of the board of directors of the Niroga Institute and was recently named to the National Trial Lawyers 40 Under 40 list, among other honors. In 1999, Ms. Watson began her career working as an attorney for American Gateways, an Austin-based nonprofit, and as a staff attorney for the State Bar of Texas before moving into private practice in 2004. Ms. Watson has presented at state and national-level conferences and has been featured in various media outlets, including the New York Times, Fox News Los Angeles and This American Life. She sits on the board of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, where she has held leadership roles since 2015. Furthermore, she has served as the chair of the University of Texas Continuing Legal Education conference for a decade. She attributes her success to her professional network and academic mentors and looks forward to transitioning into teaching roles in the coming years.
