269 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dr. Kyle Steele Couperus is a physician leader, educator and innovator with over 20 years of health care experience. He dedicated seven years of his life to serving in the United States Army, and in 2022, he transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserves, where he continues to operate as an officer. Furthermore, Dr. Couperus is an assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the University of Washington School of Medicine. After receiving an associate degree in nursing from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Canton, Dr. Couperus worked as a nurse’s aide, licensed practical nurse and critical care nurse. His experience as a nurse pushed him to further his education at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he received a BAS in nursing. He ultimately achieved an MD at the University of Buffalo and entered a residency in emergency medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center. During medical school, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army, and in 2018, he completed a combat deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. Following medical school, Dr. Couperus pursued work in emergency medicine, continuing at the Madigan Army Medical Center. During his residency, he suggested using virtual reality medical simulations to improve trauma training. The hospital implemented his suggestion, creating an education system that is now foundational in international training. Inspired by this success, he pursued similar projects, developing a passion for creating lifesaving technology and innovation. Dr. Couperus considers his most remarkable achievement to be the development of a minimum viable product aimed at training military medics in life-saving techniques for battlefield situations. Through extensive research, he and his team have garnered valuable insights into leveraging technology for medical training. Using augmented reality and virtual reality, they train medical professionals through realistic simulations, with a strong focus on treating patients with traumatic injuries in challenging battlefield scenarios. In the coming years, Dr. Couperus strives to further revolutionize medical education both within the U.S. and globally.
