114 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION DR. PATRICIA L. BUSK PROFESSOR University of San Francisco San Francisco, CA Dr. Patricia L. Busk is an expert in methodology and educational statistics who has dedicated more than 45 years to teaching and research in her specialty. Naturally curious and an accomplished student in childhood, her initial interest lay in the humanities, and she wanted to become a history teacher. At the encouragement of her father, Dr. Busk instead explored opportunities in mathematics, quickly realizing her aptitude for the discipline. Dr. Busk completed a Bachelor of Arts in math from The College of New Jersey in 1966 and continued her education at The Catholic University of America, where she obtained a Master of Arts in statistics. After contributing to a study at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago involving extensive educational interventions, she developed an interest in educational research. In 1976, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in quantitative methods in educational psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Busk began her career as an assistant professor at Michigan State University, where she taught for two years. In 1978, she joined the faculty at the University of San Francisco, beginning in the school’s counseling psychology department before moving to its learning and instruction department, where she remains a valued figure. Dr. Busk is widely regarded as a leading figure in educational statistics research and development, including review and creation of research standards and test construction. Her work has covered meta-analysis and nonparametric methods applied to singlecase data, and it has been applied to reviews of teaching effectiveness and data in higher education, among other instances. She has published extensively, with articles included in the International Encyclopedia of Education and Encyclopedia Statistics in Behavioral Science. In addition to her research, Dr. Busk supervises first-year doctoral students during their thesis proposal seminars and research courses in order to ensure that they have a strong foundation for success as candidates and future scientists.
