116 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION From a young age, Sheila D. Acevedo Limontas dreamed of becoming a teacher. After receiving a BA in English language education with a minor in Spanish from the University of Central Florida, she began teaching in Orange County, Florida, in 1974. She then earned an MEd in English education and English for speakers of other languages at her alma mater before pivoting to teaching at Florida State University, Palm Beach Atlantic University and Nova Southeastern University. In 2016, Ms. Acevedo Limontas and her husband started Global Education and Multilingual/Multicultural Services (GEMMS) in Haiti and the United States. The organization provides global academic services, referrals, humanitarian connections, and multilingual and multicultural services through a partner center in Haiti and via other international connections. They are noted for facilitating fundraising to support small womanowned businesses, providing seminars on health care, domestic violence, caregiving, nutrition and cooking, and offering school supply stipends for students. In 2020, the organization was renamed Angela’s GEMMS Inc. in honor of Ms. Acevedo Limontas’ late daughter, Angela. Ms. Acevedo Limontas is proud to have won a national award alongside her team for their Jobsite English Project. Through the project, she and her team shadowed workers learning English as a second language and wrote a curriculum to better facilitate their learning process. Various companies — including boat manufacturers, AT&T, and Walt Disney Resort in Germany, France and China — participated in the project, allowing recent immigrants to learn English for small talk and communication during emergencies. Through this project, thousands of participants improved their job performance and stability. Since winning the award, the Jobsite English Project has been implemented in many schools throughout the U.S. Furthermore, Ms. Acevedo Limontas has developed a case study model for youth in facilities such as prisons and detention centers so they could receive ESOL services. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue teaching and assisting immigrants and underserved youth. With Angela’s GEMMS, she is working on two academic projects in Haiti, providing scholarships for women and children. SHEILA D. ACEVEDO LIMONTAS PRESIDENT Angela’s GEMMS Inc. Delray Beach, FL
