In 1993, Dr. Assaad was among the founding members of the Economic Research Forum (ERF), where he remains active today as a research fellow. As part of this organization, he and a team of collaborators built the ERF Labor Market Panel Survey, a series of longitudinal surveys of labor market and human development conditions in Arab countries that he began in Egypt in 1998. He recently completed the fifth wave of the survey in Egypt in 2023 and its third wave in Jordan is currently being implemented. The survey was also carried out in Sudan and Tunisia. All data collected through these ambitious, longrunning surveys is available to the public and has served as the basis of numerous research papers, dissertations, reports and policy briefs published internationally. Dr. Assaad started his academic career at the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs in 1990, where he was recently appointed as the Orville and Jane Freeman Chair in International Economic Policy. Throughout his career, he has sought to invest in and mentor younger researchers. He served as the director of the Humphrey School’s International Fellows program and as co-chair of its Master of Development Practice. Moving forward, Dr. Assaad plans to retire from teaching over the next five years and focus increasingly on his research and mentoring activities. He will continue his leadership in building research infrastructure through data collection and dissemination, and he intends to venture further into conducting randomized control trials of promising anti-poverty and human resource development interventions. D r. Ragui A. Assaad has enjoyed more than 40 years of distinction as an educator and researcher. Born in Egypt, he came to the United States when he was 18 to study at Stanford University, and in 1981, he graduated with both a BS in physics and an MS in mechanical engineering.
