119 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition EDUCATION on to earn a Bachelor of Music at the University of New Mexico. Ms. Bateman returned to the school for graduate-level study 30 years after completing her bachelor’s degree. She considers the experience one of the greatest challenges of her career, and in 2018 she was awarded a Master of Music. Ms. Bateman is proud to have cultivated a positive and encouraging learning environment while teaching orchestra at Jimmy Carter Middle School. Within her classes, she built a community based on music appreciation and working together, increasing the program from its initial 25 students to over 150 students. She always considered her students' tastes when selecting pieces for them to perform, ensuring that they would be eager to practice their instruments. Watching her students work hard in and out of class gave their final performances additional meaning, and she was particularly moved by the piece they played for her during their final concert before her retirement. In the future, Ms. Bateman envisions herself working to build symphony programs in underserved communities in Mexico or South Africa. She also strives to become more involved with the local symphony program in New Mexico. She is considering returning to teaching in some capacity and is interested in working with elementary school students. In addition, she plans to write either a fiction book or a memoir. Now that she is retired, Anne Calder Bateman fondly looks back on her 32 years teaching orchestra in middle schools. Early in her life, her parents purchased a cello for her and ensured she had access to private music lessons despite financial hardships.
