In 1968, he ventured into higher education and joined Michigan State University as the associate director of the school’s Center for Urban Affairs. Since then, he has worked with universities across the United States, most recently serving as a Victor E. and Caroline E. Schutte Missouri professor of urban affairs at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration. Though he is now retired and no longer teaches classes, Dr. Ellison remains a member of the faculty with privileges at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Highly qualified in his field, he holds a BS in education, history and biology from The University of Kansas and a PhD in leadership, sociology and urban development from Michigan State University. Adjacent to his primary professional endeavors, he founded The Seed Center, a volunteer organization he started by utilizing resources from his career in education. He is particularly proud to have collaborated with Clark Kerr, the first chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education for 15 years. Together, they developed programs that led to the creation of community colleges throughout the country, attracting financial contributors such as Dale Carnegie. Dr. Ellison also became the youngest university president in Washington when he joined Seattle Central Community College. Furthermore, he made history as the first African American elected to the Kansas City Junior College Board of Trustees. Looking to the future, he hopes to continue enjoying his retirement while also working on a memoir.
