129 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition EDUCATION As the first member of his immediate family to have graduated from college, Dr. Clifford King has a unique perspective on the transformative power of education. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in French with a minor in English from Savannah State University, he began his career teaching French at the primary and secondary levels in 1968. He left the classroom to honorably serve in the United States Air Force from 1969 until 1973. Later, Dr. King pursued a Master of Education from a joint program between Georgia Southern University and Armstrong State University and worked towards obtaining Teaching 5 and Teaching 6 certifications, which serve as a doctoral equivalent. As he approached retirement, he instead decided to return to school and completed a Doctor of Education at the Business University of Costa Rica in 2002. After completing his doctoral studies, Dr. King moved from classroom teaching to administration, becoming an elementary school principal in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. He spent many years facilitating children’s education, emphasizing the importance of humility and empathy to his peers and students. In his role as principal, he drew from his experience in church leadership and maintained consistent involvement to show support and effectively address challenges. He lives by the credo that “a person can be considered great, but if their greatness cannot be shared and used to help those who may not have had the same opportunities, then it diminishes the impact of their achievements.” In the coming years, Dr. King plans to ensure that his grandchildren take their education seriously and learn to become independent. He is currently working on a memoir, “The King Who Few People Really Know,” which he considers a major career milestone, and looks forward to its publication.
