Darling is a professor emerita at the University of Arizona and a leading expert on the history of the Ottoman Empire and the historical economy of the Middle East. She holds a BA from the University of Connecticut and both an MA in teaching and a PhD from the University of Chicago. Dr. Darling attributes her success to diligence. Working for The University of Arizona has been an important part of her career, providing her with access to libraries, conferences and opportunities to communicate and network. In 2024, she was granted professor emerita status, and remains affiliated with the school, where she continues to research and advise graduate-level students and doctoral candidates. She is the author of “A History of Social Justice and Political Power in the Middle East: The Circle of Justice from Mesopotamia to Globalization” and “Revenue-Raising and Legitimacy: Tax Collection and Finance Administration in the Ottoman Empire, 1560-1660,” and looks forward to completing her newest book “Reading Ottoman History: A Sourcebook,” among other writing endeavors. PROFESSOR EMERITA The University of Arizona Tucson, AZ Dr. Michael I. Darter is an award-winning engineer and professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He celebrates more than 40 years of technical innovation for the transportation sector, including pavement design and construction for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. He also assisted in the creation of a pavement condition index developed during his time with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. Darter was granted professor emeritus status in 2003 after 30 years of shaping the next generation of engineers. He has also held many industry leadership roles throughout his career, including a term as the executive director of the Pavement Research Institute. To commemorate his achievements, Dr. Darter has received many industry awards, including a Carlos Jofre Award from EUPAVE and the American Concrete Pavement Association’s Hartmann-HirschmanEgan Outstanding Achievement Award. In his retirement, he is dedicated to producing creative works, with several published books to his credit already and a screenplay currently in development.
