In total, he has contributed 62 articles to professional journals. In light of his contributions to science and engineering, Dr. Shuck has been honored with numerous accolades over the course of his career. These include the Ralph James National Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Materials Testing Award from the American Society for Testing and Materials. Additionally, he is a four-time recipient of the Ford Foundation Fellowship. West Virginia University also honored him in 2016 with the opening of the L. Zane Shuck Nanobiotechnology Laboratory. When considering the future, Dr. Shuck hopes to continue inventing and exercising his brain. Though he is semi-retired, he has spent much of his time working on an eleven-month research project, and he is in the process of preparing the final report. Dr. Shuck returned to teaching in 1976, serving as a professor of mechanical engineering and associate director of the engineering experiment station at West Virginia University for four years. Shifting to an adjunct professor position at the university in 1980, he continued teaching for another five years. In 1980, he founded Technology Development Inc., where he currently serves as the company’s president. In his adjacent professional pursuits, Dr. Shuck recently conducted a U.S. Department of Energy research project pertaining to the construction of enhanced oil and gas recovery methodology and technology for deep pay zones below 7,500 feet. Deeply committed to civic advocacy as well, Dr. Shuck founded the WMAC Foundation, a nonprofit venture, in 1997 and currently serves as the organization’s president. He is also the founder and former chairman of the Appalachian Rivers Conference and Exhibit and a former science and technology coordinator for the West Virginia legislature. During his time with the U.S. Department of Energy, he was involved in the production of four technical films and sat on the editorial board of the In Situ Journal.
